A brochure website is the simplest type of website in terms of functionality. Brochure websites typically only have a few pages, and will be used by small businesses that need a simple online presence. For example, a small plumbing company would only need a brochure website with a homepage displaying contact information, an ‘about us’ page and perhaps a couple of photos of their work. Their website is like an online business card for potential customers.

A business website is any website that’s devoted to representing a specific business. It should be branded like the business (the same logo and positioning) and communicate the types of products and/or services the business offers. By now, every business out there should have a website. It’s a widespread expectation. Every potential customer you encounter will just assume that if they Google your business looking for more information, they’ll find a website. And if they don’t, it makes the business look less professional or legitimate.

An ecommerce website is a website through which users are able to pay for a product or service online. This will normally involve one company selling to multiple users, but can also take the form of a multi-vendor ecommerce website, commonly known as a ‘marketplace’ websites. A marketplace website allows multiple vendors sell to customers within the same site. Well known examples include eBay, Amazon and Etsy.

Personal websites have been a favourite for families and people who wish to document the big occasions of their lives such as weddings, new babies or their travels. These days, the modern alternative; blogging has become an extremely popular. Blogs are usually updated frequently and older posts can be viewed through archives.

Media websites collect news stories and other reporting. This category includes websites such as The Washington Post, The Independent and the New York Times.

The websites of educational institutions and those offering online courses fall into the category of educational websites. These websites have the primary goal of either providing educational materials to visitors, or providing information on an educational institution to them.
